In the sea of fertility tetrology Mishima explains how a man can gain identity by heroic death and prove himself. At one point during Runaway Horses, the parable of a mouse that believes itself to be a cat kills itself in order to not be eaten by a cat is used to analogize this mentality. Essentially in order to prove yourself a man and a hero you must die to the world and be willing to die a dramatic death.
